Veterans Supporting Veterans

PTSD Support for Veterans

The effects of trauma don't always disappear when the danger is over, the uniform comes off or a treatment program ends. Veterans deserve practical tools, connection and resources they can reach when difficult moments arrive.

Understanding PTSD

Trauma Can Continue to Affect Everyday Life

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. Veterans may encounter trauma during military service, training, accidents, assaults, disasters or other experiences.

PTSD can affect people differently. Experiences may include unwanted memories, nightmares, feeling on edge, avoiding reminders of traumatic events, difficulty sleeping, changes in mood or difficulty concentrating.

Having access to professional care, supportive people and practical coping tools can be important parts of responding to these challenges.

Reveille's role is educational and supportive. The Reveille Foundation does not diagnose PTSD or replace professional mental-health treatment. Our goal is to help make useful educational tools, resources and connections easier for veterans to reach.

Practical Tools

Skills Veterans Can Keep Within Reach

Mental-health treatment can teach valuable skills, but remembering and using those skills during a difficult moment isn't always easy. Reveille is being developed around the idea that educational tools should remain accessible after someone leaves a treatment program or appointment.

Grounding

Grounding techniques can help redirect attention toward the present moment by focusing on immediate surroundings, physical sensations or other things happening right now.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness involves noticing thoughts, emotions and experiences in the present moment without automatically reacting to them.

Distress Tolerance

Distress-tolerance skills are designed to help people navigate intense emotional moments without automatically acting on an immediate urge.

Recognizing Patterns

Learning to recognize connections between situations, thoughts, emotions and behaviors can make patterns easier to identify and discuss.

Daily Check-Ins

Regularly noticing changes in mood, stress, sleep and anxiety can help veterans become more aware of patterns developing over time.

Connection

Isolation can make difficult periods harder. Trusted friends, family members, fellow veterans, peer-support communities and professional providers can all be parts of a veteran's support network.

After Treatment

When You Get Home and Hear Crickets

A veteran may spend days or weeks in a structured treatment environment surrounded by professionals, other veterans, scheduled activities and support.

Then the program ends.

The veteran goes home, and suddenly that structure can be gone.

That gap is one of the reasons the Reveille Foundation exists.

We are developing Reveille to help put educational mental-health tools, check-ins, resources and eventually greater veteran-to-veteran connection into something many veterans already carry every day: their phone.

The Reveille App

Reveille is being developed as a veteran-focused mobile application containing educational tools inspired by approaches veterans may encounter in professional treatment, including DBT, CBT and CPT.

The goal isn't to put a treatment center inside a phone. The goal is to help veterans keep useful tools within reach when life happens outside the treatment room.
